Comment:

when i installed linux, after initial system setup i come to a login screen. normally (on previous installations) i would see this screen for a mere few seconds before i am moved to gui.

so i enter my root login, yet I can't go into graphical bit. when i installed i did server install (and I have fedora running alongside xp which is hda1 and fedora is hda2). In fact i had many problems dual booting xp-fedora, the problem i was having was sometimes boot loader won't run, or there would be system disk error.

But now, I have this problem no able to access the graphical screen, am i doin anything wrong or what. would there be a command that takes you to graphical mode, i thought it was ctrl+alt+f7, tried that but screen goes blank

Thanks in advance.

look in what runlevel you are

# who -r
run-level 5 Mar 3 01:08 last=S

if your answer gives 3 instead of 5 then that is the problem.

run:
# init 5

and you will be in the GUI (if you installed a X-server and window-manager)

if you want the system to automatically go to runlevel 5
change the line

id:3:initdefault:

in the file /etc/inittab to

id:5:initdefault:

try

# startx &

and see if it gives you error messages.

it could be that your X-configuration is't set up correctly..
