I have Ubuntu 8.10 on a machine of mine for using & experimenting with. I must say i'm quite impressed with it on broadband.
Now I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my dad's computer did all the updates and got it running in tip top shape fully updated. I then went to configure it for dialup. "he has no other cheap alternatives in his location"
I've basically gotten the box to dial out but it won't stay connected. I know it's some kind of linux issue as it connects successfully with the user name and password.
It errors Something along the lines of Ubuntu won't give out permissions to the user "Nick" to make changes on vdial? i think.I got frustrated after hours of messing with it and gave up.
Any suggestions?

Oh yea i'm using a US Robitics PCI NON WIN modem.

You have to either get that modem to work with a how to guide if it is even supported. Otherwise you need to get an old hard modem (I assume yours to be a soft modem).
They used to give the serial modems away but now kind of expensive.
Not sure what your chipset is. You might have to scan it or even look at it. It might be a supported rockwell.
See here to start.

It's not a soft modem. It works fine with linux. Back when I had dialup and tested Mandrake, Redhat, etc. it never had any issues part of the reason I kept it.
I also have 1 or two of those US Robotics Serial modems. It too dials out and works well with linux.
My problem is with a premissions issue with Ubuntu I can't figure out.
Both pci and serial are easily recognized by ubuntu, configured, Initiate a dial tome, dial out the number, connect and get disconnected from a failure to make some kind of vdial thing.

what is your internet service provider & will they allow you to connect with just a user id, password & access number?? your situation sounds alot like what used to happen to me when I tried that with netzero, I would connect then THEY would disconnect. This had nothing to do with linux or my modem.
http://www.copper.net/
this isp doesn't require you use their cappy software like aol or netzero. Although the last time I tried to connect with a free netzero account, using puppy linux about 2 months ago, I was able to connect and stay on, 2 consecutive days. This may have been a fluke but, it may be worth creating a free netzero account & trying it. If it works post back.larry

His internet is perfectpcdialup.com You can use their dial up or just a dial up networking connection.

Then send AT commands to modem and see if it replies.

This is what I get when I try to connect, maybe perfectpcdialup is not compatible with linux?

Now we are getting somewhere.
Any forums at that ISP or any help support that might offer how to connect with other OS's?
