Keep in mind I am very new to this.
Installed Red Hat 8.0 and everything went fine but upon startup I get the message that x cannot start - It is likely that it is not set up completly (EE) screen(s) found-but none have a usable configuration.
Now, through searching the web I understand this is a common problem and is a video card conflict? I have a Intel d845glly board w/ onboard video. 82845g/gl graphics controller. The monitor is an optiquest v655.
I have also discovered that fixing this is somewhat involved for a beginner. I attempted some fixes but they get me nowhere. I was hoping to get familiar with Linux through the graphical interface and get more involved as time went on.
I also understand that everyone who is reading this that can help is probably bleeding from the ears right now but I would appreciate some *detailed* instruction on how to get x up and running.
ie: what to type at the prompt, command lines, etc... Basically, how do I configure x ?I originally was introduced to linux through a distro called "storm" which ran fine, but that was a couple years ago and I wanted to have a common distro to delve into.
Thanks in advance-

There is a file called /etc/X11/XF86Config (-4, if you're using Xfree v 4.0.0 or higher). There is your X modes described, but you hardware cannot use them. Try setting a lower resolution, for example just try with 800x600, and see if it works, and/or a lower bpp value. XFree tries to start with the resolution that is first on the mode line, so try setting the 800x600 first. I'm not sure if refreshment rate affects this problem, but if changing the res and bpp doesn't help, then try a lower refreshing rate.
Greetings: Otto

as noted, this is a configuration issue, not hardware. You shoud be using XFree86 Version 4.2.0 or higher. You must read the contents of
/var/log/XFree86.0.log as you tune the configuration.
You must know the horizontal and vertical refresh rates of your monitor.
After you boot
CTRL ALT F1 - this gives you a console prompt. Log in as root.
init 3 - make sure X is not running
Typically, you have to to the following:
1 .Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
2. startx - if this does not work, then
3. view the log contents to see what went wrong
Go back to step 1.OR try
xf86config in place of step 1After you get an acceptable screen, init 5
or reboot.

The Xconfiguration program included with RH8 is #redhat-config-xfree86
try using that after you get the card info...chipset, refresh, etc...

In RedHat 7.3 you would use Xconfigurator and just use generic monitor settings. But they may have dropped that from 8.0 being how they dropped everything else. I guess that is why 7.3 cost 69$ at Staples and 8.0 is 29$

Chris, This might actually be a hardware not a software problem... well in the way the the hardware is not set up properly... You didnt mention that you looked at the bios settings for the video card... (what did you try that didnt work?)... take a look at http://computing.net/linux/wwwboard/forum/15479.html if you havnt... dont be (too) afraid, you cant hurt much if you only change the video bios. (as far as i know RH8 has xfree 4.2.1)... After checking that then follow the advice above...
if you cant get into x run (as root) #xf86config
it aint pretty but it will make a XF86config file for you that should work (because redhat-config-xfree86 is graphical)hope it works...
