can you put linux on a pc with out windows and can you tell me what does linux do and is it better then windows and which is the best linux for my pc which is pentium 166mhz CD-ROM 2GB HDD floppy ATI grafix etc etc thanks for your time cool_softwere

Linux have nothing to do with windozzz. it is an Operating system itself.
Better than windows?? are you seriously asking this question? If most ISP and internet router are using Unix/Linux OS... because it's not so bad!!

There are tons of websites out there that tell you about Linux.
The computer you mentioned will run Linux fairly well. I don't know how much RAM it has because you never told me, but 32 or more is best. The hard drive space is certainly enough also for a distribution like Red Hat or Mandrake (they make much bigger distros, requiring several gigs, and some very small ones running in anything from about 200 MB down to booting from a single floppy)
This is my general opinion about Windoze vs. Linux in general:1) Linux is much more stable, robust, and reliable.
The only time I have seen Linux crash is on my 486-33, with very little swap space, when there simply weren't enough resources to go on. On my Pentium 120 with 48 MB RAM, I have yet to experience a crash.2) Linux performs much better than Windows.
3) Linux can be customized and tweaked more for your own preferences. Everything from the kernel up to the interface that you see can be tweaked in just about any imaginable way.
4) Linux runs on nearly any kind of system, such as:
IA32 or i386 (386, 486, Pentium, and above)
IA64 (Intel Itanium)
PowerPC (like G3 and G4 in Macintoshes)
DEC Alpha
Sun SPARC
HP PA-RISC
MIPS R4400
Motorola 68K (some older Macs)
...and many others you don't care about."so Windows is more popular" please don't get me going on that subject, I will end up ripping someone's head off and insulting a lot of people just to prove how wrong you are.
"so what, Linux has no software" you may claim.
That is nowhere near true. Linux has a huge base of software available. A large portion of it is completely free for download (open source or GNU General Public License). I have found that much of the Linux software is much higher quality than any free Windows software, not to mention better than a lot of Windows software you may pay for.
Linux is also partially capable of running some Windows programs with Wine. I don't know much about that... but if you HAVE to have some of the programs... There's also VMWare and Bochs, which could run a copy of Windows (or pretty much any other operating system) under Linux."Windows is SOOOOO much easier to use"
Sure, maybe it is, if you're going to be using Linux in text mode. But if you're still under the influence of Windoze, there are interfaces for Linux that are pure eye-candy, and so full of prettiness and ease of use that Windoze does not hold a candle to them. Most people choose not to use interfaces like that... because they can tend to be slow and bloated [unless you're on a reasonably fast computer. If it can run Windoze at any speed, it can run Linux faster]I believe there's a link on this site about disadvantages & advantages to Linux, I just need to find it.
However, using and installing Linux still requires you to learn SOMETHING about computers as well as the way Linux works in general.

i no alot about computers i am only 14 i have all redy built my pc up and no it is not a 166mhz that is my old one my pc i am on now which a built myself is as follows AMD DURON 800mhz 128 mb ram 20GB HDD 52x CD-ROM DVD 10x and 20x norrmal CD-ROM sony 8x/4x/32x/ CD-RW 1.44mb floppy i put windows ME on it and it crashs a lot but i have a old MEDION 166MHZ (pentium) 32mb RAM ATI GRAFIX WITH VOODOO ONE 2GB HDD but i have a old 10GB spar i might put that in with it so it will have two HDD does linux need a HDD with out a dos partition (FDISK) i no windows sux but i do not want to put linux on my AMD 800 mhz pc i want to see if i like it first and yes i noyou can get linux from yahoo action's for 2 pounds a copy but what i want to find out is what does linux do can it run windows programs etc and is ther any games for it and can you go on the net with ntl world and can you network linux with windows !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks cool_whittle

Hi,dears.
I have WinAdvancedserver & win98 in my C:.
But I want to install Linux RedHat 6.2 in my D:.But Installer of Linux don't quistion from me that where LILO install.(MBR or ...)
Now,I want to install Linux,& when Linux installed,I will install LILO on MBR.But I don't know how do it.(Linix with Windows)
Please Explain me...
Thanks a lot.

That's funny. I'm 14 as well. Remember, just because you can meddle with hardware doesn't mean your are omniscient about computers...
Also, could you make some attempt to use something close to proper English in your messages? As in, use sentences, not frantic fragments and run-ons, and use a period a few times. It will make you MUCH EASIER to understand and will heighten my belief that you actually are smart.About buying Linux:
Buy? Linux? Sure, if you want some convenient CDs and a big manual, you can go ahead and pick up a copy at most random computer retail stores. It is, however, completely free for download. linuxiso.org has ISO images for many major distributions that you can burn to CDs. You don't get a big fat manual and a nifty looking box if you download it, but you can find as many manuals as you want online.

Now let me attempt to rewrite what you're saying, and answer some questions on the way.
I know a lot about computers. I am only 14, but I have already built my PC up, and no it is not a 166 MHz, that is my old one. My PC I am on now, which a built myself, is as follows:
AMD Duron 800 MHz
128 MB RAM
20GB HDD
52x CD-ROM
DVD 10x
20x normal CD-ROM
Sony 8X/4X/32X/ CD-RW
[ * do I understand you properly... do you have a 52X, DVD-ROM, 20X, and CD-RW? * ]
1.44 MB Floppy
I put Windows ME on it and it crashes a lot.
I have a old Medion 166 MHz (Pentium), 32 MB RAM, ATI Grafix with Voodoo One, 2 GB HDD, but I have an old 10 GB spare. I might put that in with it so it will have two HDDs.
[ * theoretically speaking, you could completely dedicate the 2 GB drive to swap, but that would be pointless. 2 GB is more than enough for a Linux installation. Maybe more is better. I could suggest that you put that 10 GB spare into your 800 MHz box and dedicate it to Linux, if you decide you like it. * ][ * QUESTION NUMBER ONE! * ]
Does Linux need a HDD with out a DOS partition (FDISK)? I know Windows sucks but I do not want to put Linux on my AMD 800 MHz PC.
[ * Linux does _NOT_ need any other operating system to run off of. It can run in its own partition entirely, or it can run in another OS's filesystem without disturbing it, usually, in the form of UMSDOS (ugly and messy, but operational) or Loop (giant file acting like a partition) * ]I want to see if I like it first, and yes, I know you can get Linux from Yahoo Auctions for 2 pounds a copy. But what I want to find out is what does Linux do: can it run Windows programs etc., are there any games for it, can you go on the net with ntl[?] world, and can you network Linux with Windows.
cool_whittle[ * Linux can run some Windows programs via the program Wine, or it can run a copy of Windows under Linux via VMWare and Bochs. Otherwise, it does not aim to be able to run everything Windoze can. If you want that, look into Lindows (I don't know the link. Use a search engine.). It's not out yet, and MS is suing and suing and suing and suing.
Games... Linux isn't exactly designed for gaming. Ports exist for a number of games that are simpler to port... (www.linuxgamingnews.com or something will tell you) and OpenGL exists for Linux. Overall, I don't know much about Linux gaming.
Networking... hmmm.... a very large portion of servers run some form of Unix or Linux. You're probably in the process of viewing web pages being served up by Apache on a Linux server... so clearly Linux must suck at networking and it definitely must not be able to communicate with Windows.
In other words, Linux is built on networking. Half the Internet is powered by it and comprised of it. Figure the rest out, show off some of that knowledge you claim to have. * ]

dear Chris Hodapp
you hear me wight i have THREE CD-ROM's in my pc an i no you can download it but on a cable modem it takes ages computers are about the only thing a am good at as you can see i am thick at english and can not spell i got into pc's when i was 7 i built my first pc when i was 9 or 10 i was a copy of every windows out ther including old 3x but i hav had enuf of windows and i am building i old pentium 166mhz up to run linux i want to see if you can make grafix model's etc etc with it thanks coolwhittle
sorry about the spelling

Ok... at least you're not fooling yourself that Windows is the best there is.
I might suggest:
1) Go to a library. Grab a couple books on Linux; the Linux for Dummies book comes with RHL7 on 3 CDs. Additionally, the books will also help you a lot with installing and learning it in general. You can rip all 3 CDs if you want; it's legal because it's open source. You could, theoretically, also get Mandrake, which is sugar-coated and rather bloated. Simple for beginners, you just don't learn too much by using the windowed interface only; the only way you'll really get proficient is by using the console and learning what some of the books tell you. Linux is full of documentation - the 'man' and 'info' command at the console will give you extensive information about any command, and 'apropos' will search for keywords in a command's description. You can learn quite a bit about Linux with that; experience and examples can also tell you a lot.

If I may add an opion, do some research befor you try to install Linux. I have found many books on Linux at used book stores and thrift stores, for next to nothing.
Thats what got me hooked on Linux. Try to down load an ISO file befor you spend any money on a Linux distro. you may find you have no taste for it.
I suggest down loading a Mandrake distro, due to it's ease of install, and it comes with tons more games than any Microshaft product.
:-)

Most people that use linux dont play games (its the truth, go into most linux chat rooms, yahoo for example, and mention the word quake and they wont have a clue about it). But I play games on linux and heres a list of what I have installed and working.
Half Life - Using Wine
Quake 1
Quake 2
Quake 3 Arena
Unreal Tournament
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
Other linux games (most distro's come with loads of them)If you need any help once you have installed linux then post a reply and I can point you in the right direction. As mentioned before by others, you should read as much as you can about linux before you install it, as this will help lots.
By the way im a newbie to linux as well :)

Relevant to that topic, many Linux distros come with your usual set of games, like your 30-pack solitaire games (yes, it has Freecell), Minesweeper, Chess, generic breakout game, generic tetris game, generic 3D tetris game, and enough stupid puzzle games to make you feel dizzy. Of course, most of the game ports to Linux require that you have the game.

I would like to put a SMALL linux distro on a 386 w/ 110MB HD wo/cd what or is there such a distro out there and if so please email me and let me know where I may D/L it.
