Hey if anyone could give me some
colaborative informaton on this I would
appreaciate it. My basic question is can
my ISP detect or view what sites I view or
surf? I recently changed ISP'S to my
universities free PPP-dail-up service, I
belive the server that i connect ot is a
UNIX v-5.1(at least thats what the telnet
dameon replies) and i use Konqueror and IE,
sometimes, to surf. Needless to say I don't
want my school to know every site I visit
and such.
Thank you in advance.

Yes, they can. Plain and simple they log all the connections that run through them, or well they do if they are worth anything. I wouldn't worry too much though unless you're doing something sevrely illegal. With as many people as they have to monitor they can't really go through everything, so they probably have some filters set up to check for overuse of bandwidth or terrorist related things... you know, stuff that they have to watch for to watch out for their own asses.

If you're really paranoid, you could search for an anonymous proxy that allows SSL.

That way, everything your ISP sees is encrypted, and they only ever see you connecting to one site, the proxy.

Also, you can use PGP or GPG for secret e-mail, and of course, tunnel as much as possible over SSH.

LOL!! Sure they can... but who care about what sites their customers are surfing?

This information is logged for security and legal reasons only.

Danny, we are living under the aegis of
homeland security now. I think a little
paranoia is justified, especially in light
of things like the dmca, sssca, and the
profligate use of penalties for
anti-american activities whatever they are.

12,
You either have to trust your provider to
some degree or not use.
Using a proxy hides your final destination
but doesn't hide your request/return
traffic, unless you are using encryption.

The uni that I work at records all activity. As far
as I know what sites a person vists are logged
but the data is not used unless there is a reason.
A student friend of mine found that out the hard
way. He made a complaint about his quota be
used up for web use. The admin replied it was no
wonder with the sites my friend had been visiting.
The admin could see what sites had been visted.

Unfortunately, security requires sacrificing freedom. Personally, I'd rather have freedom in this case.

I'm not an impressionable child that will be lured into meeting with some middle-aged sicko. I'm not going to give a credit card number to every "you've won a free cruise" site I come across. Monitoring me won't help catch any terrorists. Where's the security value for me?

Don't worry about us seeing where you surf, that's all in a log file and would take hours to sift through. Be more concerned about us reading your email which we can and do easily. :)
