I have one hard drive c:. Can I put all my linux files in one folder (c:\linux), and create a diskette that when its in, the system boots from the floppy and loads linux off the hard drive? That way I could keep win98 as the main boot program on c:
I'm still in tire kicking mode so I do not want to set up the hard drive as full dual-boot yet. I guess I could just boot from a linux CD, but the point is I want file access to happen primarily from the hard drive. Thanks

No, Linux requires it's own partition. As an alternative you could try out one of the CD-based distributions (they run entirely from a CD and do not have to be installed on your hard drive.) I prefer Knoppix. You can download a CD image at www.knopper.net.
