can i boot from a cd-R - no floppy on pc

i have a dual boot windows 98 & 2k pro ( soon to override with 2k database server ) but anyways i wanna install linux & i dont have an A;\ ( 3 1/2 floppy ) every1 ive herd from says i need one in order to get it to boot & s--- & i dont wanna go pay 20$ for a floppy drive when im only gonna use it this once ive done fine without it getting drivers for my devices online 7 such & i was hopeing i could get the "boot disk" to linux online from some1 & burn it to a bootable cd-R like i have done many other a:\ programs & my pc boots from the cd-rom if it can automatically so can some1 help me with this problem ive gone as far as i can go with windows i have every version of windows on differant pc's in my home network & its boring i need a new challenge so can some1 e-mail me with how2 cd-boot or if i even need a boot & what kind of linux i should get ( mandrake , red hat ect.....) thank u please e-mail me the answer since im gone alot & wont be ably to check this board for a week or so. you don't need a floppy drive. All you have to do is get a linux distro and boot it from cd. If your bios doesn't support booting from cds then boot the installation from dos using loadlin. Redhat has a dos .bat file on their cd, you can use it if you are installing redhat. Good Luck. sorry, no time to email you.
