I just got my free Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 discs from pogolinux.com and was quite disappointed with the way the operating system is put together. First off you are forced into installing KDE, whether you like it or not (not to mention whether you have the disk space for such fluff). Then there's a matter of very little room for initial configuration during setup, as a consequence I am forced to make room for a bunch of internet apps I don't want in the first place. That's just the beginning...
When I first start the system I am thrown into an X session, and when the K-Terminal emulator has finally decided to open, I find that the OS has taken the liberty to decide which drives I need mounted. Fine I can configure this myself.
The selection of packages, this assumes you have room after the installation is done, is non-existent, if not just limited. There's no OpenLook or Gnome (only KDE), no Ada95 compiler and no fun "bonus" packages you might like to find on the cds. It uses, in my opinion, the tritest configuration method possible. I guess Caldera decided that foisting KDE and the internet upon users is what matters - Maybe for someone who is happy in keeping with the Windows95 mindframe, even in Unix.

Just wanted to voice an opinion here. Does anyone use this monstrosity and actually like it?

Caldera Openlinux is not aimed at the home user, who wants a configurable GUI or many goodies. It is aimed at the network admin who just wants a server.

Caldera says this at their website

I'm new to Linux. Tried RedHat, Suse and then Caldera. I was impressed at the ease of install of Caldera. Again, I'm just a newbie testing the waters.

I have some clients interested in Linux... So, I'm learning the ropes.

Which version are you using? eServer or eDesktop. I got eDesktop. It's exactly what I expected: an internet desktop. It is quickly becoming my primary home OS. Set up this "monstrosity" real nicely on my Thinkpad 600 too. If I was interested in typing command lines all day long, maybe I'd have gotten something else. Maybe Red Hat would be more appropriate for your situation. What the heck? Ya got it for FREE!!!
