OS: RedHat9/Mandrake 9.2
CPU/Ram: P4 2Ghz/512 DDR
Comment:

I have RedHat 9 on my machine and yesterday I added Mandrake 9.2. When I boot up my machine I no longer get the GRUB boot loader instead I get the the LILO screen. The menu does not show RedHat 9 as an option. The boot record has no record of RedHat 9. I have gone into Mandrake's control centre to get information about what is on my drive.

Here is the contents:

Device: hda1(RedHat 9)
Type: Journalised FS: ext3
Size: 101MB(0%)

Device: hda2(RedHat 9)
Type: Journalised FS: ext3
Size: 8.7GB(46%)

Mount point: swap(RedHat 9)
Device: hda3
Type: Linux swap
Size: 1019MB(5%)

Mount point: /(Mandrake 9.2)
Device: hda5
Type: Journalised FS: ext3
Size: 5.3GB(28%)

Mount point: swap(Mandrake 9.2)
Device: hda6
Type: Linux swap
Size: 494MB(2%)

Mount point: /home(Mandrake 9.2)
Device: hd7
Type: Journalised FS: ext3
Size: 3.3GB(17)

So it seems as both O/S's are alive & well. I need some way of the boot-record showing RedHat 9. I am not a techie so some layman terms would be very useful.

Please help!

Thanks, Dave.

Now do you want GRUB or Lilo? Tell me and I'll tell you how to set it up. Technically GRUB is better as it can directly read filesystems, theres not need to re-run grub to update the config, or when you update your kernel image.

In a terminal: man lilo
After editing /etc/lilo.conf run the command lilo.

By the way, why not let Red Hat and Mandrake use the same swap partition?

Alright, grub.
Now as root, type "grub". In the grub shell, type "root (hd0,0)"
Then type, "setup (hd0)".
This will install grub, and you can now boot into redhat. Now when you're in redhat, you have to edit the file /etc/grub.conf to add your mandrake parition. Just add:

title Mandrake Linux
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ro

Now you can reboot and have both the systems in your grub menu. Email me if you have any problems.
