I have gone through the 292 message in the Linux Specialty Forum "Linux
as dual boot with XP Pro SP2?", but that would leave me with a Linux
dual boot screen.
As I am having very much trouble with WinXP on my desktop PC and have
tried the basic Ubuntu version before Feisty Fawn 7.04 I would like to
know the following in order to make a pleasant dual boot.
Can I make a new partition with Partition Magic 8.0 in WinXP and after
setting that as the active partition install Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 on
it. Then with the PM8.0 rescue diskettes go back to the XP partition
and install Bootmagic.
In this way I thought I would have a better bootscreen than the Ubuntu
one, which overrides the Windows MBR if I install Ubuntu Feisty Fawn
7.04 from the Ubuntu LiveCD. Am I right in doing it like this or not ?

I am about 2 days ahead of you doing the exact same thing. Try this. It is a beginner's way to install UBUNTU 7.04 Feisty Fawn. Nothing has ever been easier to do for me. Even reinstalling over another copy. It just seems to hang at points but keep waiting, it will just be redoing the mess you made. Be patient. Let me know how you do.

Download this and burn it to disk with something like the free "image burn". Something that makes the disk bootable. Or maybe "CD BurnerXP pro" It will take all of 5-10 mins. I may be mistaken and you just might be able to hit a WUBI.exe file that is in the download. I installed on a different Drive. on 2nd thought you DO NOT need to burn a disk unless you need it for other machines. That is why I did it, to test how it would work.DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL, just like any other Application. REALLY, IT IS TRUE!!!
You will be prompted to do everything including making the swap drive on the new partition. WUBI even asks you how you want to do things in easy language and TELLS you exactly what the names of your new drives and partitions will be so you can write. I have this thing on 3 computers now, just for fun and learning purposes. Good by windows, real soon I think, altho there is a lot to learn
Reboot machine and follow the REALLY easy instructions. If I can do it you can do it.
Just make sure you think before you type in anything or before you hit enter. Taking your time is the key. I did it wrong the 1st time too, but man was it easy to reinstall right over the broken install with this WUBI thing. It makes it simole for people like us that are new to all this strange languge. TRY WUBI.

I have used wubi
http://wubi-installer.org/
to install ubuntu. This gives you 2 boot options.
Wubi installs ubuntu through windows. It means you can uninstall it from windows.
It doesn't use lilo or grub.It means you don't have to use boot magic.
If you run the wubi executable file, it will automatically download the ubuntu iso file. Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

To clive: I have a question for you. We both had the same site above. Whait I do not understand is should I Have said "NO" when asked if I wanted to install grub to my mbr? Should I have done that? I have the option to boot into XP or Ubuntu in the boot menu, so grub is definately in my mbr of my XP boot drive. I said above i was new to this, so from answering a question for a guy, you have raised a question in my mind.
Soon I hope to hear from you guys.
Thanks,

Hi, download the beta on this page
http://wubi-installer.org/Then run the wubi exe file, if you are connected to the internet, it will automatically download the iso file. (ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso) 700mb?
It has to be this version to work. You can resume at a different date if you have a slow connection.
Then you will get these screenshots
http://wubi-installer.org/screensho...If you follow the instructions, it does everything for you.
The way I understand it, you don't use grub. I now have wubildr.mbr & wubildr in the root of my C: drive. & my D: partition & my E: external usb drive.
There is a speciality sub forum for wubi here http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdispla...
I can't remember being asked about grub, but if it came up, I'd say no. I can't remember being asked about swap files.
Did you use the latest wubi installer? Version 7.04.04Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Absolutely--Yes and yes again. Should I uninstall this and try it for a third time?
I have a disk and the installer as well. The disk IS the correct one. I do not get it. It worked perfect on my "basement" machine, but I am obsessed with getting it correct up here on my main PC. That is why I am being so cautious. i CANNOT MESS UP THE BOOTING ABILITY OF xp. i ALREADY HAD TO DO A "fixmbr"Anyway what should I do? Wubi is on my machine.
There is a 30gb virtual.disk that it lives on my other drive. (sata)
All appears well, but I get the grub error 21 which I found out means grub does not see the hd
In XP's MSCOFIG/BOOT>INI, there it sits:
(Wubildr.mbr="Ubuntu")What the heck is wrong, but most important, How do I fix it?
It was so crazily easy on the other machine that i do not care about.
THANKSD616

I don't understand why you are having problems.
If you remove wubi via the add/remove programs in windows, there is an option to save some files, this means you don't have to download the iso file again.
failing that go to the wubi forum.
Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.
