Booting to Console

Comment:
I have a dual boot system with RH 7.2 and Win xp. For some reason I cannot get to the GDE with Redhat. I have tried changing the /etc/inittab/ file to set the default runlevel to 5, I have tried to start the GDE by running initx and also tried ctrl-alt-f7. None of these have worked. The GDE used to work, but for some reason since I made changes to my home network, I can only access the console screen. Please help.

try adding to your kernel options init 5, or init=5. Depends on the kernel, one of them will log you directly into X. The other option is to log in on the console, and then run startx. Hope that helps.

Default runlevels: 3=text 5=GUI.
4 is sometimes used for auto user logon to a GUI and by some distros for X, but for the majority is it unused.
What error do you get when running "startx" from a console?

type in linuxconf and make changes to boot menu. Theres an option if you want to log in automatically to GUI.
