booting linux 9.0 without x server

I'm trying to install the nvidia graphics driver for my card. But when I do, it says I'm running an Xserver and need to close it. nvidia.com says i should boot into "vga console" instead of x server. So, how do I go about doing this? or is there a better way of installing "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run"

No you really are going to have to log out of XServer. It's actually not that hard.
You need to edit etc/inittab. You should have a line that reads:
id:5:initdefault (or something like that)
change the 5 to a 3 (console mode) and reboot.
then you can run the nvidia installer. You will also have to edit XF86Config file.
i HIGHLY suggest that you read Nvidia's readme as it explains all of this in detail.

Hi. You really shouldn't need to reboot.
To install my Geforce 420mx drivers, I logged in normally, opened a terminal window, and typed init 3 . This closes X and sends me to the non-graphical log-in. then I can log-in to a prompt as root, and do the install. Then, I edited the XF86CONFIG file as the instructions say to do. When i was done, I typed init 5 to go back into graphical mode and logged into X. This worked for me, and I didnt have to re-boot once.

You can also pass the runlevel to boot into at a lilo/grub prompt, eg: linux 3 will boot into runlevel 3 (text mode)
