I am trying to dual boot Windows VIsta and
ubuntu. I have four hard drives hooked up to
an EVGA motherboard with 9 SATA ports
distributed between 3 controllers. 2 of the
hard drives are hooked up to one controller
(referred to from here on as my primary) ,
where my bootable CD drive is also
connected, and 2 others are hooked up to
another one and configured in RAID using
JMicron's RAID utility.I'm trying to install ubuntu to one of the hard
drives hooked up to my primary, and windows
to the other one. The one I'm trying to install
ubuntu on is reused- I had it in another
computer, and during installation completely
reformatted it. Nevertheless, after installation
of ubuntu on this computer, the motherboard
will simply not boot from the hard disk. Note
that if I install ubuntu on the other drive, a
brand new VelociRaptor, it works perfectly.
Also, note that when I started installing
windows, a message came up when it was
time to select partition/hard disk to install to.
Under the option to select the re-used drive, it
warned that the disk "did not appear to
bootable", or something to that effect, and to
configure the mobo/bios so that it would be.
However, both hard drives are enabled in the
boot order on my bios, with the old one
coming first in order.Any help would be much appreciated.

I am kind of confused.
Did you install xp then linux?
When you boot to ubuntu cd can you view contents of odd drive?

I've built a brand new computer. I first installed ubuntu on a
brand new velociRaptor drive, and it worked perfectly. Then I
realized the ubuntu on that drive was rather wasted. So, I
reformatted that drive, and installed ubuntu on the other drive.I haven't checked if I can see the contents when I use the live CD- I have simply installed ubuntu to the old drive straight up, and it seems to go off without a hitch
From this, ubuntu could not boot.
In the process of reformatting the velociraptor drive after I
mistakingly installed ubuntu, I used a Vista installation dvd,
which gave me the warning about not installing to the old drive.
When I did finally install ubuntu to this drive, it wouldn't boot.

The only reason I can think of is your grub is on some drive and not pointing to the new install correctly.
