Boot probs on mandrake 8.1

I just installed linux yesterday and i just ran into my first problem!! i cant start the KDE desktop i get cammonadn prompt that asks me for my password and login, but once i get there i dunno what to do i trieds "startx, startkde" with no avail it gives me some type of errors. waht do i do?? these are the errors i get "startx" excve failes for /etc/x11/x (errno 13) xinit: No Such Fiile or Directory (errno 2) xinir: No Such process (errno 3) when i type in "startkde" xsetroot: unable to open display xmodmap: unable to open diplay
