X Customization - blank screen problem RedHat7.3 & XP
I have a problem with Linux installation. I installed on a new system which I just purchased - Compaq Presario 6016US. and ViewSonic VA520 Flat Panel Display.
Processor Brand AMD Athlon™ XP 1800+
Graphics Integrated nVidia GeForce2 graphicsI partitioned the hard drive with windowsXP home edition disk and left unpartitioned free space where I installed linux. I had some problems with dual boot and could not resolve it. Again I repeated the entire installation procedure, with partitioning the entire system as before, first with XP and then with Red Hat 7.3.
When installing linux this time around I had a problem:
The installation software selects my monitor during Custom X Configuration and the video card. I have a flat panel display ViewSonic VA520. The system defaults to:
- NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (generic) video card
- DDC Probed Monitor and selects VSCba07 type of monitor.
This selection worked during my first installation. However during consecutive and repeated attempts to install linux, during X Customization, after clicking on Test Settings button for Customize Graphics Configuration, the screen goes dark and stays blank. Before when it worked, it would display the GUI with a message box and would allow to set the Screen Resolution.
I don’t know what causes this problem and how to resolve it.
First installation – the GUI environment worked just fine.
The next installations, done the same way, and my screen goes dark blank. After a reboot, the machine goes into the text mode.
I am using original Red Hut 7.3 software to set it upPlease HELP!
p.s. From installation point of view, is there a difference in behavior between XP Home edition and XP Professional? For example when installing linux with windows 98 or ME, boot loader needs to go to MBR. With Windows2000 it goes to first sector of boot partition. Is there a diffidence between the two XP, Home or Professional versions?
Can I ignore the 1024 cylinder rule for boot installation, since I have a modern system?
Thank you for any advice.
Robert

had same problem with a kds monitor and 7.2 redhat solution in may case was pick a low setting for resolution and color depth (16 mill) and skip testing when the ops system loaded the gui came up fine
