How about disabling stuff you don't need (sendmail, postgres etc), recompile things optimised for your system as opposed to using precompiled binaries and maybe try parallel booting....I can enable it on my gentoo boxes and it attempts to start boot daemons together rather than one after one. Hdparm can seriously increase your drive speeds, make sure your swap is being used and if possible add more RAM. If you are using a GUI try a different light-weight window manager to KDE/Gnome such as xfce or fluxbox.

Try installing bum (Boot Up Manager) for a GUI....but you should probably read up on runlevels, man inittab, /etc/init.d, /etc/rc.d etc
