If you have too many processes running, maybe it's time to turn some of them that you don't need or use off!!! If you don't use your system to send or receive mail, turn off sendmail or postfix. If you don't host any web, then don't run httpd or apache. I could go on and on but I am not sure what you run besides games on your system...

Don't run X if you don't need it. X is infamous for being a memory hog.

How do you not run x and run in text mode only...because im not dat great with linux and the only thing that shows up is graphical screen...thats y i think FreeBSD is the best one and known for not being a memory hog.

Does ne1 know how to run in text mode? and not in kde or gnome...thanx

In the file /etc/inittab, there'll be a line for the default runlevel. You'll want to change the 4 or 5 to a 3.

FreeBSD 4.9 would make an excellent server, better than Mandrake, in my opinion. I don't know if it would be worth switching, though. Also, you'd have to make sure the game server would run in FreeBSD.

I too love slackware and find that by default it doesn't run loads of processes...nice and quick to boot and shutdown as well.

Go for Slack 9.1 it is the latest stable release. Yes it has a graphic interface. It will default to KDE but you can also install Gnome or many other window managers or GUI's etc. It will default into runlevel 3 which is multi user text. You will have to run XF86config and then you can just startx or root can init4 to get a graphical login. If you like you can even edit the /etc/inittab script to default to runlevel4. It will ask which services to run during the install as well as which GUI to use if you install more than one.
Slack is fast and simple boots up fast and shuts down fast. If I could get Xiamian Evolution to work on it I would use it for my main box. I have built the source for it but it dont work even though some people believe that if you build it from source it will work without dependency issues that is just not the case. Evolution has 15 programs that it depends on and I dont guess they put those in the tarball.
I am sure it will make a very good server for you.
Good Luck
Ron

Ronald if you want Evolution you can get it from the DropLine GNOME distribution, here:
http://www.dropline.net
You can get individual packages here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=62166

I'm not sure if you need to get the complete distribution due to build dependencies (ask in the forums, you can build the package yourself) Anyway it looks much better than the standard Slackware GNOME packages.

Hope this helps
