If its the first time you are going to be using linux I whould say try out Redhat 7.3 another Linux distro I tried out was Lycoris which is very easy to install and use.
Also check http://www.distrowatch.com/ which list all linux distro.

try Mandrake 8.0,as I found this the best for novices, although Red Hat 7.2 is good as well, but Mandrake gives a tremendous amount of window managers/desktops to try,Slackware 8.1's good but a little hard for the novice to set up but the rewards are worth it,try Mandrake 8.2 as well, but KDE 3.0 is a little buggy,SUSE gets a good press but I haven't tried it yet,but apparently the install is a breeze,my advice is if you have a little computer savvy go for Slackware 8.1,a little patience and the rewards are worth it,especially as it uses kernel 2.4.18 so less need for a rebuild

If you only want to run software written for Windows, you should probably stick with Windows.
If you still want to try Linux, use whatever your friends use, so you can swap tips and help each other, etc!
