hi all!

i am looking for a version of linux (that is somewhat easy to use, i'm no expert), and that works with apple PPC computers. i have:

iMac G3, 400mhz
512MB SD-RAM
40GB Hard Drive
CDROM Drive
Ati Rage 8mb video card
ethernet, firewire, etc.

my questions are:

1.) which distro is the best for this machine?
2.) How do i burn it on my pc so that it is bootable on my mac?

i'm basically gonna use it for listening to music, watching youtube videos, reading the news, etc.

thx in advance!

Right you are if you think you are

I'm not familiar with Macs so I'm not sure if these are even compatible, but I'd say SimplyMepis & Ubuntu are 2 that you should look into.

And from what I've read, DreamLinux is said to be very "Mac like"

I have never owned a mac. In my 50 years I have only seen a apple/mac in front of me twice. (not counting walking past them in the store) I don't know anyone who owns a mac. BUT from what I hear and see on TV I think that you should upgrade to Mac OSX.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Im not familiar with Mac

Your system if im correct might have a IBM ppc processor.
These oses might be supported

Mandrake 10.1
Mandriva 2006
Fed core 5 or maybe 6
and many more

Dude PPC is supported you should not have any problems. Your configuration is very good.

I higly recommend using a live CD of knoppix first without installing anything on your hard disk.

YOu might have to download it and burn it on a cdrom-- if this is not possible then i suggest you go to your local magazine shop or stall and ask them about a linux magazine
and where you can get a knoppix cd. Buy it. its very very very cheap.

After you have finished with the all this you might have aproblem running mp3 file or watching youtube movies
NOte:-- Mandriva or mandrake and knoppix distributions support out of the box support for everything- music and movies.

I highly recommend you get mandrake 10.1 or mandriva 2006 anyhow and install it.

Download it and burn the iso image on the cd's or DVD.
Later on check for the for the boot image file. ANd your done. Reboot your system

These come mostly on DVDs now a days so i suggest you buy a dvd rom drive which is very cheap and quintessential

If your pessimistic you will get this in five or six CD's.

Fear not installation is simple.

Just leave (or put) OSX on it.

OSX is based on BSD/Unix, which Linux is simply a copy/clone of. OSX will run all Linux applications, whether command line or X11(GUI) based.

Unix systems are as susceptible to hostile software attacks as any other system, however, the Unix community is zealous in their believe that they are immune. This belief is in the face of reality!
