Reply: (edit)I agree with armin. The less people get dependent on MDK/Suse/Redhat the better(user beware: ones distro is like ones religion, discussing can result in heated debates). If you have any experience working in DOS then setting up debian/gentoo shouldn't be much of a problem. Debian now has a graphical installer (mentioned on distrowatch) and gentoo has a well written install guide. You really can't go wrong with either. There is no better way to learn linux than installing one of these distros.

Reply: (edit)Hi Nick You need to set the criteria for evaluatiing "BEST". We could be subjective without any criteria. E.G. just Apache and PHP, I would say go with Linux From Scratch. That is, build your own, then put it on a 386 I picked up on the road side. Is it the best? It runs on a 386, 5MB HDD, 4MB RAM.
