I am in the process of scrapping our M$
Exchange 2000 server here at work and would
like to make the change to a slackware
server as transparent as possible to our
users (currently using outlook 2000). I am
thinking along the lines of sendmail,
procmail and spamassassin and would like to
hear of anyone's experiences with the above
(inc qmail, postfix, clamav etc) and
perhaps even a webmail frontend? What is
the best way to tie outlook in? What about
public diaries? Should I go the whole hog
and start switching the desktops to
GNU/Linux if it will make my job easier?

I've been using a combination of sendmail and spamassassin, and I've recently (this week) added Trashscan which uses Clam antivirus to scan each incoming message. It seems to be pretty decent having caught several Netskys trying to get in.
The server is also providing pop3 for the client connecitons. In short, I like it. A lot.
In the past year there have been no problems with down-time, and the users are pretty happy with the spam and virus filtering that the server takes care of for them. The folks here are using Thunderbird, Mozilla Mail, Outbreak Express and Outbreak 2000 as their email clients. I'm slowly but surely getting the company out of the Outlook jungle....three more users and I'm done.
Setting up the server is the easy part. Dealing with the emotions of your users is the tough part. One big obstacle for me was that people don't like change, even when the change is better:
Quote:
"In outlook the "get mail" thing was in the middle. This Thunderbird thing has it all the way on the left. You're gonna have to change that or I can't use it."and here's a complaint destined to be a classic:
"In outlook all my messages went to the inbox. This Thunderbird business puts all the spam in some kind of "junk" folder. This free stuff is crap"
Good frikkin' luck with all that.
Here's a nice link on getting spamassassin going.
