Sounds like you only installed the OS and what you are looking for is a desktop, I settled on KDE awhile back and have kept it.......Dont stop now as you days of computer problems may now be a thing of the past....Welcome to LINUX

Maybe someone else will come along and chime in
on this, what a friend shared with me and has been working for me was to install EVEYTHING and from there over time you can go in and pear things out that you find you seldom or never use, the main point in doing it this way is in the future as you may find utils. etc you will not have to experiance a design issue with Linux which is called "file dependencies"
Hang in there, get everything installed get back on the net and keep us posted...

dwin,
I have not installed a Mandrake "DISTRO" in almost 6 years and I just don't know how far or what method you used for your build, below are a couple of links that I bet will get you further along on your install, just go and dig around a bit and you will probably find a description of just where you are right now and what your next steps should be……

Rather than asking yourself "what now?" try
asking yourself "what do I want to do?".
What do you use your computer for? Watch
films, surf the net etc? A couple of
commands you may find useful are apropos and
man. Apropos will list commands/files
relating to a subject and man will display
their individual manual pages.

Let's say you want to listen to some music:
$ apropos mp3
Out comes a list of things about mp3, one of
which states "a command-line mp3
player"...so how do I use it?
$ man mpg123
Up comes the manual page. After a brief
read:
$ mpg123 /path/to/song.mp3
...and I'm listening to music!

I definitely agree LinuxOS2 regarding
installing everything to start with....saves
a lot of hassle in the long run. Who
installed madrake for you? It should have
prompted you to insert the other CDs if you
had them. You can still install software
from them through the mandrake control
centre....type "mcc" to get started.

Here's a link useful for people switching
from DOS/windoze to *nix:

I'd say try a live-CD version of Linux. Boot from CD-ROM.

I'd try typing startx (and hit enter) at the command prompt and see what occurs :)
