audacity trouble

OS: redhat 8.0
CPU/Ram: p4/256mb

when i try to record or play something in audacity i get the error "error opening audio device". i tried esd -terminate but nothin happoened i tried quiting all programs that use sound and still i got he same error. is there any way to fix this? (audacity is setup to use /dev/dsp for the sound device)

i got it to work but is there some kind of kernel hack or somethin to allow the sound card to play and record at the same time?
