Support for the Ati radeon 9000/9700 is not in the current release of XFree86, 4.2.1. RH7.2 only has 4.1.0 anyway.

The next incarnation of XFree86, 4.3.0, is slated for release Dec31 this year last I heard. It is suppossed to have preliminary 2D support for the RV250/300 chipsets. This includes your Mobility M9.

DRI support, or 3D acceleration is probably a lot further off. I don't think there are DRI drivers for the Radeon8500 yet. ATI has released some basic 3D drivers for the Radeon8500 using the FireGL drivers. You may get lucky and ATI will someday release drivers for the Radeon9000/9700 someday too, but ATI doesn't seem too commited to linux driver support.

Until then, because of lack of options, you have to use the VESA driver for X.

I am also looking for this driver. Also, where does one get the standard VESA driver for X?
