I've been doing some reading up, but Is Apache actually take that much configuring and compiling to actually get up and running

I know how to set up a web server in Windows and I have to admit it is super easy to get a website up and running in windows... Yet I haven't as yet been able to get the Apache webserver up and running in Suse 9.1 and or Mandrake 9.0 yet ... If someone could point me in an direction to learn alittle more about it I'd sure appreciate it ,,,,

MSI 845e mb 768 mb ram and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

Apache config found this site and looks interesting! Seems to be easy enough to see what may be going on on the webserver

Typically, all you would need to get started is to put your files (index.html, etc.) in the right directory, and then load the daemon. Further configuration may be needed (as is indicated in quacked's link)

The directory you may be looking for (where my default files are to be located) is "/var/www/html". They used to be (older distros of Linux) in "/home/www/html" (if I remember correctly).

I'm not sure how to load your daemon, but in versions of Redhat and Mandrake I've used, enter this at a command prompt:

# service httpd restart

(or, if that doesn't work)

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart

Next, load your web browser and enter the ip address (or hostname if set up) in the url area.

(Don't forget that you may need to modify your firewall to allow connections to that port.)

Good luck.
