Hi, all.

I've seen questions about eth0 failing to start in this forum before, but the advice either did not work or I did not understand correctly.

I am using Red Hat Linux 7. All seems to be working great . . . except for the fact that I can't seem to configure it right to get online. I am familiar with the process of using Linuxconf and/or Network Configurator. I've correctly entered my IP address and my netmask along with my DNS IP addresses. I assume my net device is eth0. I am 99% sure that the kernel module for my NIC is de4x5 (I've looked it up). Do I have to manually indictae an I/O port and IRQ setting?

When I boot the computer, I always get the "eth0 failed" message:

eth0: insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/net/de4x5.0: insmod eth0 failed

Of course, Network Configurator shows that eth0 is inactive after I boot up -- but even when I activate it at that point, I still can't get online.

Any suggestions? I am a novice LINUX user who wants to convert from Windows -- but I have just a few annoying hurdles like this to jump over.

My NIC appears to be working (I can ping 127.0.0.1).

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply, Neil. I read your other response, but I still don't understand. Maybe I am just stoopid.

I can't find anything called modules.conf in the etc directory. How do I go about finiding it and modifying it? I am a Linux beginner, so please excuse my stoopidity! I want to figure this out . . . Thanks again.
