I've tried using kernel 2.6.x and my only complaint was the built in ALSA sounded like crap. I use the latest ALSA with my 2.4.24 kernel at the moment. I was just wondering, if I don't compile ALSA into the 2.6.x kernel, and then build ALSA with the latest files from alsa-project if it would be compatible with the kernel 2.6 (and also would I put my aliases in /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modules.d/aliases)?

Thanks!

btw I'm using an Audigy Gamer.

ALSA is in good condition in Linux 2.6.2, you shouldn't have any problems. Try playing with the mixer settings, you can use "alsamixer" or "aumix" to do that. Have the "PCM" volume greater than 70% will drive the soundcard AMP into clipping, and you will hear distorted sound. Try decreasing it.

btw, you shouldn't have any problems using the newest ALSA modules, but you'll have to compile them from source using the headers from linux 2.6.2 sources. The modules included in 2.6.2 should be pretty "new" btw.

Well I got 2.6.2 going with Alsa and after changing the PCM volume to around 50 it sounds great. Only 1 problem, my 2 back speakers don't work anymore. What can I do to get them to work? When I boot into 2.4.24 with Alsa they work.

Make sure they aren't muted. Everything in ALSA is muted by default. I hope you have "alsamixer" installed, I dunno if aumix will show the rear speakers as it only works with OSS emulation.

I've already unmuted everything, and I used alsamixer to set the volumes.

Hmm, I tried the ones from alsa-project, failed to get them to work, then went back to the ones built in the kernel, restored my volumes and all 5.1 speakers worked.
