Every time I talk on a Linux forum, and I talk about a problem im having with Mandrake (not mandrakes fault, im still learning linux) there is always this one guy yelling "Slackware rules!". Could you guys give me the advantages (at least in your opinion) of why Slackware is so good. On slackwares site, they dont give any specifics. Thanks.

Well,

I have tried several distros and Slackware is cool because:

needs little resources (less than your Mandrake)

it could be run even on a 386 (I have Slack on a Celeron and 486 as well)

it comes with the sames things (almost) as other distros and you have to download only one ISO CD image.

it's carefully tested and that means that its apps are stable and secure

if you read LinuxToday, you will notice that Slackware is less times than other distros in security alerts news. (less than Debian)

Her installation program remains the same as long time ago just because it doesn't need to be fixed

doesn't have dependencies-related problems because its simple and powerful package manager (TGZ)

Slackware is a beautiful thing. I recommend you leaving your bloated Mandrake and give it a try; is worth! You'll learn Linux!

Slackware installation isn't hard to do. Setting up it is. However there are many people on the Message boards willing to help (that makes Linux even cooler).

Once its set up, is it as easy to use as Mandrake?

I think ill try it when 9.0 goes final. Its already on RC2.

Sure!

It's easy just because you can use GNOME 2.2 or KDE 3.x.

Mandrake ins't really good. Slackware is pure Linux. RedHat is nice and even better than MDK.

Read www.slackware.com/book/ before installing!

Is slackware more reliant on the Command Line? I dont mind using it, but id like an option to do things through the GUI as well.

How is it "more" Linux, could you give examples? Sorry for being pesky, but I get a lot of Elitist type attitudes toward things, and with OSs and subjective stuff like that, half the things people tell me are lies, so I have to ask questions.

slackware is the most UNIX like distro of linux which is why it is more LINUX than other distros.

I have been running slackware for several months now and will never go back to redhat or mandrake again.

Slackware is the GOD of LINUX and like n0dez said it is more stable.

That's it.

Slackware loads only the things needed. You can change that, so everything will run faster.

You can go to www.dropline.net, download the dropline package, run installpkg dropline_seomthing.tgz and the type dropline to update your Gnome from 1.4 to 2.2

So, why don't you give a try? You can contact me if you run into problems.

I'm running Slackware from version 3.0 (Linux kernel 1.2.13, I still have it on my 486 DX/4). I have try a lot of distros in this time (Red Hat, Mandrake, Caldera, Conectiva, Debian and many others).
* I agree with the above opinions is the most configurable, UNIX like, flexible, stable and fast.
* There are another distros that follow their philosophy with different aproaches like Vector Linux, Rock Linux, Root Linux, Crux and others, many mini-distros are based on it too, because of their flexibility.
* If you want to learn UNIX is the best Linux distro.
* Some people say that the lack of a package dependency system is their main weakness, but I don't agree with that, it fact is their strongest advantage for advanced users (and you'll become an advanced user quickly using it, sure). Compile programs and made your own packages it's trivial. After some time using it you will discover that you have built your own distro acording to your tastes not the ones of another guys.

Conclusion: Give a try to Slackware!!!

Politics by n0dez...

Linux: Federal Republic
Your Mozilla crashes (ain't probably). Then you run it again as nothing happened. :)

Windows: Monarchy, dictatorship
Your Internet Explorer crashes (very common) and you gotta restart the whols thing - your Windows OS.

I've found Slackware Linux the most Linux pure of all GNU/Linuces.

This Linux. You're free to choose whatever distro you want, ...
