Subject: ADSl modem install problemOS: XP Pro SP1CPU/Ram: P640 1GBModel/Manufacturer: Home |
Comment: I am in the process of installing Fedora Core 4. Created primary / partition (15Gb) and swap partition (2Gb). Installation from DVD went alright, however my internet connection does not work. Have a problem with my Siemens Speedstream 4200 ADSL modem, connected via USB 2.0. The modem is not automatically detected, manual installation using /sbin/adsl-setup does not work either. My ISP does not support Linux, only told me to use as primary DNS address xx.x.x.xxx and leave the sec. DNS info open. The error message I am getting is: ‘/sbin/adsl-start: line 217: 3431 Terminated $ CONNECT “$@” >/dev/null 2>&’ I am new to Linux and would appreciate a little bit of help. Regards, Wilfried

Reply: (edit)Seems to me there are two options. Use ndiswrapper and hope it works, which is unlikely, or if its possible connect to the modem with a cat5 straight cable. USB networking devices tend to only be windows friendly... Nothing's broken until you choose not to fix it.

Reply: (edit)Hello ccpeterman, Sorry about being that late. If have hooked up my modem via a ethernet cable in lieu of a USB one, same result, no go. Talking again to my SP (they are not supporting Linux however said that pppoa is applicable), I have been advised just to install the network and not to use adsl-setup. They gave me the Default Gateway address, my computer's IP address and the Standard Net Mask. I cannot see where to insert those data, since the 'Network Setup'under System Configuration is to me a bit confusing, especially when my modem is not on the supported list. Regards, Wilfried

Reply: (edit)Keep the hookup with the cat5. ignore the fact that there are no drivers for the moment. easy thing first..try using the dhcp client for the card connected to it. If that doesnt work try running "adsl-setup" Also after a little looking, you may need a crossover cable not a straight through. http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/fedora/updates/4/ppc/rp-pppoe-3.5-27.FC4.1.ppc.html Nothing's broken until you choose not to fix it.

Reply: (edit)Hello ccpeterman, Thanks for your message. I am running XP Pro SP1 and Linux Red Hat Core 4 under a dual boot configuration. There is not network card involved since my motherboard (Intel D945G) has onboard Ethernet as well as USB, both of which I tried, as said before. My Intenet connection under Windows works fine and I am afraid to run into problems when using a catalog5 cable instead of the one supplied with the external modem. I tried to follow the Linux HOWTO instructions for PPPoA altering the files /etc/ppp/pap-secrets as well as /etc/ppp/options to include my login details and password, as applicable. The instructions ask me to start pptp 10.0.0.138 (pointing to the modem), but pptp apparently is not available. Have to say so that those instructions refer to a Alcatel Ethernet Modem which might differ somewhat from my Siemens Speedstream 4200. I thought I give it a shot anyway. Booting does not give me any ppp 'Failed' message, however neither browsing nor email works. Here are some of the modem internal pages, they might be of interest: System Summary System Type: SpeedStream 4100/4200-Series Config Part #: 003-7056-G03 Firmware Part #: 004-D240-A0U MAC Address: 00:0B:23:B0:A0:68 Point to Point Connection Summary: PPPoA(0) 8/35 58.164.38.211 Current Routing Table Ethernet Status Port Status Uptime (hh:mm:ss) Speed (Mbits/sec) Duplex MTU (Bytes) 1 UP 02:54:38 100 Full 1500 Ethernet Statistics Port Octets PDU Counters Unicast Non-Unicast Total Dropped Errors 1 Tx 21618394 31696 8799 40495 0 0 Rx 2675518 25986 1041 27027 0 0

Reply: (edit)PPPoA is handled inside the 4200 as your post shows and the 4200 has a valid IP as seen by the output. Study up on what you have as it is a Router not a Bridge Modem. Enable DHCP and Linux will (if properly configured) start it's DHCP client and that client will ask (request from) the 4200 DHCP server for an IP address. 4100/4200 User Guide http://80.127.153.164/Documents/4x%20UM%20007-4035-001.pdf Regards, Doctor Olds

Reply: (edit)Doctor Olds, many thanks for your message. I certainly will try this one, once I have Linux working again! I stuffed around, re-installing at least 10 times. Now, although a 'fresh'install, Windows only will boot. No screen appears to enable me to select XP/Linus OS. Acronis OS Selector is detecting Linux, however trying to start it from there brings up a blank screen with a Grub_ prompt, mouse and keyboard are dead. Very frustrating, but I am not giving up. Must have something to do with the MBR. Regards, Wilfried
