I am new to linux. I just installed Ubuntu on a PC which uses my TV for a display. The issue is that the top and bottom of the screen is cut off. Normally I would use a monitor's hardware controls to fix this, but being a TV, there are no such controls. How can I do this through software? Also, is there any way to improve the display quality on the TV? (I know TVs are inherently less clear than a monitor, but are there any settigns that will help)

I run gentoo linux on my xbox which goes through my TV set. It probes the telly when starting to find the modelines required (which are a little different to a PC monitor due to resolution etc) so I can give you a copy of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for you to experiment with (once I get home, can probably post it in a day or so).

Just had a quick scan on the net and you may find this of interest (it also contains modelines submitted by users for their TVs):
