Have u tried sound when logged in as root? I found that I did not have permissions for /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer (or devices to that effect), and this was causing sound not to work. Also, in mandrake 8.1 the mixer setting was set to 0 by default, it could be the same in mandrake 7.1. Check it out anyway...
