Hi The AC97 is a sound card onboard, I install SuSE Linux 7.1 to a friend with this kind of motherboard and SuSE autodetect the sound card automatically and the sound is really good. What kind of Linux do you use? Maybe you need to change to another Linux distribution.

The drivers are usually on the CD that comes with the motherboard. If not there are Linux drivers at www.driverguide.com or try the drivers link in the left sidebar.

1 word... OSS! Works great, but since it is commercial it limits the time you can use it. Keep trying to get it to work correctly, but if all else fails you can get OSS from opensound.com.
