Hi folks,

FC3

Just installed a DVD-Writer "Sony DRU-820A" to replace the existing CD-Writer. Failed to burn DVD ISO image with K3b

media used: DVD+RW (1X-4X)

# rpm -qa | grep dvd+rw-tools
dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8-2

# cdrecord -scanbus

Note that in K3B there are separate projects for burning CD data/ISOs and DVD ones....are you are selecting "burn DVD ISO image" and not "burn CD image"? Check the extended error output from K3B, perhaps you are trying to write in a mode like raw when your drive will only accept SAO/DAO?

Hi 3Dave,

I'm sure that I ran DVD project not CD project.

It came to my notice that k3b, dvd_rw-tools, etc. on FC3 were out of date (old). So this time I ran Knoppix LiveCD 4.0.2 to do the job.

Burned DVD ISO image again.
Same result - no burning with the same warning displayed as above.

Formatted DVD+RW, this time with "Quick format" unchecked
Same result as "Quick format" checked. The light of the DVD writer did not glow. I don't think there was any action taken.

I have no DVD+R at hand therefore I can't check it.

Any advice. Would K3b and relevant tools on Knoppix are still not up-to-date? TIA

Hi 3Dave,

I got FC5_64 DVD ISO image burned successfully on DVD+RW. The DVD Writer needs a 80 wire IDE cable.

Sony DRU-820A did not come with an IDE cable. At time of purchase I asked the computer shop what IDE cable I needed. I'm going to replace the existing Sony CD Writer. The guy told me using the old IDE cable. At that time I could not recall the number of wire of the IDE cable. I asked him again whether I need an IDE cable used on ATA133/100 HD. He confirmed not necessary just retaining the old IDE cable. It is rather funny.

I was able to record a Sony DVD+R on my Sony dru-820a only after doing a firmware upgrade to version 1.0b. The recorded CD come out from the burner in 7 or 8 minutes. I am using Fedora 3 and cdrecord. I have updated the kernel to the last version available on Fedora web site for FC3. The problem with this device running under Linux is that it is apparently a "write only device", because no DVD reader was able to read the CD recorded by it, including the dru-820a itself :). According to Sony support, I should return it because I does not work under Linux. That is exactly what I am going to do. I am disappointed with Sony.

Same problem, same writer and ISO file. I take it you got the Nero Burning 6 ROM with your writer. Do not use ISO, UDF, or boot disk format to write this disk. You must use the "Copy and Backup", "Burn image to disk" programs to burn this particular disk as the file is already in the correct ISO format. Will not work if you try to remake it into another ISO file as it is one NOW. I just got one to work a few minutes ago. Have lots of coasters, need any?
