Comment:

I was using a 15" TFT monitor (Proview) on my Suse system when I typed a document in Abiword. It displayed correctly on the screen until I swapped monitors for a 17" CRT. Now, the Abiword document does not display correctly, there are lots of gaps between letters, and if I type in the missing letters they don't appear in the correct places and sometimes do not appear at all! if I copy and paste the complete text into Open Office or K Word it all comes out perfectly. I have no printer on this PC at present so I cannot tell you if it will print from Abiword. I started a new Abiword document as an experiment, but it too started leaving out letters and if I tried to retype them it played the same strange tricks on the screen. Does Abiword have it's own inbuilt video drivers? Is there a setting to change the output for the new monitor... or is this a symptom of another fault? Should I reinstall Abiword?

A Happy New Year to all at Computing.Net

If these problems persist, I think, you should uninstall AbiWord and install OpenOffice.org. (or use KOffice and do not install anything at all)
I mean why do you still use AbiWord if it gives you so many problems? And about the built-in drivers: AbiWord has nothing to do with the video drivers.

Yes Godgory I know what you mean, but I think you are missing the point. Yes I can easily use KWord and Open Office, but if Abiword has been distributed with Linux in the past it must be a fairly stable and reliable piece of software and I should be able to use it. I just don't understand why a change of monitor would alter the function of any program. I'm actually very intrigued about this. I'd love to fiddle around with any settings that are available, but I thought I'd better ask around first in case someone knew from their own experience what was happening. Since posting my original message I've installed a load of fonts, and now they all come out as the wrong ones when selected... by Abiword only of course! It must be a breakdown of communication between the program and the gizzards of the computer. I just wondered if snyone else had encountered these strange errors when changing monitors.

Yes, I know what you mean, Tommy.
Well the fact that you changed your monitor has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with your AbiWord document. Did you perhaps change the screen size (aka. resolution) ?
Try installing some new video drivers. Or try to change the resolyton. Or both. If you place a missing letter elsewhere in the document does it show? I mean is it a charecter specific or a display specific problem?
Alex.

Perhaps I didn't make myself sufficiently clear: try copy-paste of the "missing letters" to another place, don't just type them again. Oh, and you could try sometinhg else: Check the font color of the missing letters.
