I know that Linux OS is based off of the Unix system, but I have a question. I am a newbie user to open source. Is Unix similar to Linux as far as the Kernel and how it gets compiled and booted? What are the major differences between Linux and Unix?

Not a whole lot of diff in terms of commands. Unix has been around a lot longer than Linux and is definitely not as popular when it comes to Home PC's. A word of advice is to familiarize yourself with commands with Unix before making the dive into Linux commands such as ls, grep, mount, cat etc. are all necessary. Great book is Unix in a nutshell, I still use mine and I love it!!!
