Comment:

I have RH8 installed and have dowloaded the latest Nvidia drivers and installed them. I have updated the XF86Config file and all works fine. When I run GL sceensavers like Atlantis, it works fine but only around 40 frames a sec.

However, when I select System Settings > Display > Advanced Tab It shows my GeForce 4 Ti3200 correctly using the nvidia drivers but the "Enable Hardware 3D Acceleration" check box is greyed out and not checked.

Have I done something wrong?
I imagine that this box should be checked.

Thanks,

Andy.

If your drivers are working and an nvidia logo comes on at startup, then they are working fine. That hardware acceleration is usually for little GUI effects, like shadows. openGL stuff is always hardware accelerated, thats what 3D is.

If the box is grayed out, it means one of two things, one: the Nvidia driver MUST have hardware acceleration, or two: You are using a generic driver that cant have Hardware acceleration.

Hmmm, don't see an nvidia logo at startup.

Any other way of checking?

Did you update the correct X config file,
probably /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to make sure
that the driver is set to "nvidia"

Yes, the Red Hat 8 version is called /etc/X11/XF86Config which I have updated.

What version of X are you running?
/etc/X11/XF86Config is the default config
file for X v3.x.x.x whereas
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 is for X v4.x.x.x,
which as far as I can remember is required
for the nVidia drivers.

What is the output of "X -version"?
