This is the problem:

I am going to install Red Hat Linux 7.1 on a Compaq server, and this server has 2 processors.

I want to know if there is a way to configure Linux, so i can assign different tasks to each processor (i think it can be done on Windows NT)

If it can be done, how should i do it?

thanks for any help.

Hmmm IMO i don;t think it can be done with Linux nor MS-windows. However, linux may attribute processor priority to a specific task. The two processors will be detected during the installation process.

Thanks for your answer danny, let me be more clear.

Both processors were detected during installation, what i want to do is something like this:

I want that one processor attend incoming email and the other one attend outgoing mail.

I know is not a very smart idea, because i can "saturate" one proceesor while the other one is doig nothing, this situation can affect system's performance.

One of the advantages of SMP is that the main processor is saturated, the other one give it a hand.

What i am trying to do will give away this advantage.

In resume, i want that one processor do a specific task (attend incoming mail) and the other one do another specific task (attend outgoing mail)

I want to know if this is possible in Linux Red Hat 7.1 or not?

if it is possible, How can i do it?

Thanks again for your help.

yes i understand your question. but there is no such option yet in linux. Only process priority can be managed but it is not possible to assign a processor to a specific process. I did not explore the RH7.1 yet, but i did not seen anything about new process or processor management tools.

Yes you can! The program you use must support it. Run this search at: www.google.com
smp string thread help

smp means symmetric multi processing.

Good Luck!
