I decided few days ago (after putting it off for so long) it was time to get my feet wet, so I installed Kubuntu 6.10 - Edgy Eft.

So far, I've been kinda slowly picking up on things while installing & configuring the system via the few unfamiliar Linux commands that I've had the b@lls to invoke, and I damn near got myself in a pickle when I completely lost the desktop trying to overwrite xorg.conf file, but I somehow got past the resilient command screen eventually thanks to the sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. I've been reading all sorts of materials and browsing a lot of Linux forums trying to get myself grounded without asking here.

However, the problem is still there and that is my being unable to use the native 1600x1200 resolution of the monitor or pretty much anything above the max option of 1024x768@54Hz ;-(

The video card in the system is a GeForce 6800 from Leadtek (Nvidia).

I appreciate any input from the regulars in this forum, before I do something pretty drastic on my own.............LOL

Thanks!

'Get the proprietary nvidia driver (we like 3d acceleration round here) install it and once it's done add this line to the xorg.conf, in the device section

Option "useEDIDfreqs" "FALSE"

get your monitor h and vsync frequencies of the net and stick them into sax2. job done you can pick any res you like all the way up the maximum.'

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_...

... or stick with no acceleration and a max res of 1280x1024 :-)

btw, to experience the difference between proprietary and non-proprietary drivers try the LG3D 'looking glass 3d' desktop (screw vista & aero ... ubuntu can install it thru synaptic)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with Adept already installed on this Kubuntu version, I don't think I'd need Synatics or do I?

I'll give your other suggestion a shot and hopefully that's all I need to care of this issue.

Thanks.

sry, m8 ... don't know Kubuntu.

instructions only given for Ubuntu's package manager Synaptic, but you can always use the regular debian instructions.

Latest....

I downloaded that driver & for some reason,
the driver installation spits an error
sh "Can't open
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run"

when I type sh
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run
to
install the driver in the terminal window.

Also my Adept updater which has been showing 5
upgradable packages available since yesterday, also spits out an error titled "Could not commit
changes - Adept updater"
with the body
stating that "Possibly there was a problem
downloading some packages or the commit
would break packages"
, whatever that is
implies when I try to apply those upgrades ;-(

my 2 cents ... you should have gotten Ubuntu in the first place (if you MUST have the KDE desktop + KMail, well, you can have that in ubuntu too).

better support and more beginner friendly and less troublesome ... to name but a few reasons for the discrepancy between #1 and #14 at www.distrowatch.com :-)

Unfortunately, I'm in too deep into Kubuntu
to turn back now.........LOL

Adept is now back to working OK, but the
display issue is still there, I have kind
of narrowed down my problem to my currently
using the legacy driver and not really knowing how to easily purge that because my handicap remains the learning curve.

As I slowly get past that in due course - I'll
be fine but until them, the struggle
continues.

Thanks again.

if you can't install the proprietary nvidia drivers you're not really deep into anything as of yet :-)

without these drivers you will not get any resolution higher than 1280x1024.

Talking about Automatix, if been trying to install the darn thing from day one, but just haven't been successful, but I haven't stopped trying though.

Also, I can't tell you how many times I've been to all the urls supplied by both of you - let's just say there hasn't been a day that I haven't since I installed Kubuntu - they are even bookmarked along with several others like them, but don't let that deter you from posting any links that you think might help this old Linux noob ;-)

I truly appreciate all your feedback and you both have a Merry Christmas, I'll keep you posted on any new development.
