I have recently installed a modem using the Conexant HSFi chipset. I have found a site, linuxant.com, which offers these drivers. However, this site wants 15 bucks for a driver! The modem itself was cheaper than that! In my opinion, this is rediculous to ask for money for a DRIVER in a FREE operating system! I am sorry for ranting, but is there any alternative to spending another 15 bucks to get this thing running?

Thanks,

Jarrett

You have three choices

1) Pay the $15 and be glad a driver even exists. A lot of modems are not even supported under linux and never will.

2) Buy a modem that has free linux support

3) Write your own driver. If you can write one for less than $15 of your own time then you are pretty good. If you are that good then maybe you could donate some time to the GNU project and write some more free stuff for the rest of us.

Here's another option:

Get a real modem, an external serial one.

Here's a couple of them for $18 apiece, and they don't need special drivers. Just point to them:

# cd /dev
# ln -s ttyS0 modem

(ttyS1 if on COM2)

That's it. Done.

Consider yourself lucky if you get the driver and not a worm virus, for the same money :)

Look at this way: You paid $15 for an operating system -- a savings of approximately $175 when compared to Windows.
