Use nLITE to create an XP Slipstreamed CD with the correct SATA Controller Drivers, also ensure the BIOS states Legacy / IDE Mode for SATA.

Also why use MS-DOS to format the drives, XP install has that facility during installation, MS-DOS died years ago...

Use a floppy disk to load the SATA controller drivers during setup. You may also be able to use a CD or USB key.

If using the IDE compatibility mode you don't need to install the SATA drivers but the drive will perform at IDE speeds. Slip streaming the drivers will allow SATA II burst speeds. If you rig and drive are both SATA II compatible then it is probably worth it.

I still use DOS to restore my Operating System from backup images. :-) The imaging programs run under DOS.
