XP won't install

I replaced a failed 30 GB hard drive for a friend, and am trying to install XP on a new 80 GB WD IDE drive. The bios recognizes it as an 80GB IDE primary master, but for some reason, the XP install CD will copy all the files, then say that there is an error on the drive. It doesn't give any details, just to make sure the drive is properly configured, so I tried all possible jumper configurations. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. It is a MSI motherboard with BIOS version W6570MS V3.4

Might want to run the WD diagnostics program to be sure the drive is good. Right out of the box it could be bad. It might be talking about the CD itself and you need to clean it.

It is Win XP Pro, no sps, and the CD works fine. The drive is good, and was setup with one partition. The IDE cable is 80 pin, and I have tried 2 different cables, and got the same error, so I doubt both cables were bad. Thanks for the resopnses.

I had exactly the same experience recently, with a new Maxtor drive. I would be inclined to believe the Win XP statement that the hard drive was bad. In my case I checked the drive with PowerQuest Partition Magic 8.0, which also indicated a bad (unformatable) drive.
