I recently reinstalled XP pro after a graphics card problem, and now XP thinks the 300GB backup HD needs to be reformatted and doesn't see and data on it. The drive shows up on explorer as F drive but when I click it, windows tells me the drive needs to be formatted. Help....All my 3 kids ipod stuff is on this drive and I'm in a major crisis with them !!!!!

check all the connections to this second HD. Make certain that the jumper is set to slave.
best of luck Frank :

Jumper is set to slave and the connections are fine. I just went into "computer management" tools in XP and there is no file system listed for the drive (NTFS or FAT32)

Hi, Set second drive to slave only if it is on the same cable as another drive. If it's the only drive on the secondary IDE port then it is the MASTER.
Luck, Jim

Did you disconnect the 300 Gig drive when reinstalling XP?
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

"How would I know"
Right click on the MY COMPUTER icon, then click PROPERTIES...it would be listed under System

XP has a habit of doing stuff like that.Tt Lanfire

plutohynes, 1st of all....make out a will...because if you lose your kids ipod stuff you will need one...LOL
When you reformatted and re-installed windows, was that on your old drive or a new one? If your main drive is set to CS, try changing it to master and make sure the 300 drive is on slave. If it's on Master, try setting it to CS and slave....juggle things around. If you have a new ribbon cable, try that or just reseat the old cable.Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

XP is indeed very notorious for that sh!t & unfortunately M$ either doesn't think it's an important enough issue to devote time & resources to or they do not have a clue either.
I have heard some claims of the drive being only being accessible if attached externally or via an enclosure, you might want to try that route before looking in to the data recovery option.

Hey, I've had this problem before. Only with two harddrives chalk full with data. This isn't an issue of hardware, it's an issue of XP's reformatting tool corrupting the partition of said harddrive. This happens if you reformat the main harddrive with the slave harddrive still attached to the system.
There is a way to fix it, however. And I did a lot of digging to find this. There's a program called Testdisk, which you can find easily by typing into a search. It's a program that's runs in a Windows dos window. When you run it, it'll automatically detect your harddrive and then you can select the option rebuild the partition structure. This'll retrieve all your data.Hope this helps. :)

Install SP2 first, as Jam mentioned. It should have support for larger drives and that may be all you need to do.

Have tried all the options you have all given me, except testdisk, and nothing is working. Downloaded testdisk but when I run it,, a dos screen appears and disappears so quick I cant see what's happening. Any hints on this piece of Software

Figured out how to see what testdisk is doing. The following message appears after it identifies the drive in the machine...
"terminfo file is missing. Check if you have not forgot to extract the subdirectories".....Any ideas
