Comment:

I am trying to install the heatsink/fan on my XP processor. It seems to be very hard to fasten the heatsink down to the processor socket, I’m afraid of putting to much pressure on the processor? Any help please.

Thanks

DaveB

The heatsink requires considerable pressure to make sure it is in firm contact with the processor. Make sure the heatsink is seated properly. Also make sure you have the proper pad or grease between the sink and processor to transfer the heat efficiently.

. . . and make sure you are putting it on the right way round. Exerting excessive pressure with the heats-ink the wrong way round will damage the CPU.

It often helps to put something under the motherboard, like a wad of cardboard, between motherboard and back plate to support the motherboard when you press. Stops the motherboard flexing to much which could cause damage.

Also, some heatsinks have a place you can press down with a flat head screwdriver. Make sure you use one that fits and won't slip out. If it slips out, you'll probably end up hitting your mobo with a heck of a lot of force.

Whenever possible, the HSF should be installed before the board goes into the case. If you lay it on a piece of cardboard on a table, there's no board deflection when you force the clip in place, therefore less chance of damage. If it's done while in the case, take Stuart's advice & be sure to somehow support the board before exerting any downward force on it...

Ryan,

It sounds like you may have damaged something...maybe the board, maybe the CPU. What exactly happens when you try to boot up?

If you're having trouble getting the heatsink off, you may need a 2nd small screwdriver to pry the clip away from the tab while you're pushing the clip downward with a large screwdriver. BE CAREFUL!

Also, there's no shame in admitting you don't know what you're doing and pay a professional as long as THEY know what they're doing.

For example, I won't fix anything on my car aside from change the oil, change sparkplugs, change the battery, or air filter. Why?

Because I don't know what I'm doing! ;-)
