I just purchased a used 17" Apple Studio Display CRT to replace my blurry 14" beige monitor. The monitor plugs into my Acer Aspire 1300 laptop, which has a cracked (and mostly unusable) screen.
The Acer works fine with the beige, generic monitor, but freaks out when I plug in the Studio Display.
The Studio Display works okay with my Powerbook, and I bought it from someone who used it with his Dell. I can't figure out what is wrong. It's this one:

With the Apple monitor plugged in from boot-up, the Acer logo and some of the initial boot text comes up on the CRT (checking CDROM, etc) , then the CRT goes black and makes a chirping noise with the green monitor light staying on as soon as Windows XP starts to load. The CRT then goes into standby and XP loads up on the laptop's screen.
When I have the monitor plugged in and change the settings under "Display Devices" in the advanced options, I can get something to happen, but only briefly. For the tab that should let me choose between CRT and LCD, the CRT option can be clicked -- but then the CRT monitor makes a turning on noise, the orange standby light turns green, it chirps a couple of times, then it goes back into standby and the CRT box becomes unchecked.
Changing the resolution doesn't help, and the refresh rate is set at 60hz (no other options).
Oddly, on only one of the times I rebooted it did the ACER recognize the monitor as "STUDIODISPLY17" (or something like that). Every other time it's been Default Monitor or Plug n Play monitor. Why is it NOT recognizing it every time?
Since the text *is* displayed at start-up on the monitor, until Windows begins to bootup, I'm guessing that Windows is sending the monitor the wrong kind of signal.
Also, sometimes, when the monitor is plugged in, the display on the laptop's screen flashes between black and the desktop.
I have updated the S3 Graphics Driver to the latest version, and Apple does not provide a driver for the Studio Display.
Please! I've been fiddling with this for days, and this blurry monitor is killing my eyes. Thanks!
