I have a used Xerox Workcentre M940 (printer/scanner/copier) that I use as a stand alone copier (ie, not connected to my computer). Worked great for almost a year. Xerox no longer makes or supports this machine.

My wife asked me to copy something onto some heavier paper so I tried to use the bypass tray in the back of the machine. Changed the paper thickness knob for the heavier paper but it would not feed the paper. Changed the paper thickness knob back to the original position. It still would not feed the paper.

Several days later I tried to copy a normal item but the paper only went far enough for the first two lines to print and it froze. It would not accept any command, even the off switch would not work . Had to pull the plug. Tried several times with the same result. The paper only went in far enough for the first 2 lines to print. Tried leaving it unplugged for 2 hours to see if that might reset something but no luck.

But when I tried to print a test sheet, it worked great.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't know if this will help but I once had a similar problem and discovered that turning CW and back CCW didn't position the setting back to original position. In my case I had to turn the adjustment in or out, can recall until the end of travel and go the other way from there. I don't know if this makes sense to you, if not ignore it. I assume you also searched the website for any info on this unit. Even when support has been suspended I have found useful info on the manufacturer's website. If you no longer have the manual you may find it in PDF format there. Look for FAQs too. Maybe recall info. If you didn't register the unit you wouldn't know of any design issues.

Thanks. I only have a knob on the right side of the machine with two positions. And it only turns a short distance, lesss than a 1/4 rotation. I was thinking that perhaps the knob is slipping on the shaft but before I tear into it I thought that I would ask around.
I have the manuals but they do not address this problem.
I tried Google but now I will try some of the other search engines.
