X800XL and Vista

Subject: X800XL and Vista
OS: Vista
CPU/Ram: Athlon 3400+
Comment:
My computer: Athlon 64 3400+, 2GB of RAM, and ATI Radeon X800XL AGP 8X. I just upgraded to Windows Vista, which my computer runs very slowly. I can't play movies anymore because the video is so slow and jerky. I think the problem is my video card because when I disable the Glass effects everything runs faster (but still very slow). Do I need a Shader 3.0 video card to run Vista smoothly?

No, but you do need drivers. Did you install the latest ATI Catalyst drivers (v8.3) for Vista? I recommend the "driver only" version rather than the whole Catalyst Software Suite, but that's up to you:

That's strange. The X800 should easily run Vista's UI.

Are you using an nForce 3-based motherboard?

The creme de la creme of Socket 939:
Opty 185 @ 3.2GHz
SLI'ed GTS-640s, both flashed to 625/1458/1950
4GB PC3200

"Yes, I have a Gigabte GA-K8NS Pro"

Good catch jackbomb!

"Attempting to install the graphics driver on a system containing an NVidia NF3 chipset and an ATI AGP graphics adapter may result in the driver failing to install and the 3D engine not activating.

In Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit versions, the Device Manager will show a (!) mark and the AGP card will operate in PCI mode only. When the properties of the device are shown, the error code will show as code 43."

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/0...

"In PCI-compatible mode, all hardware acceleration is switched off, negatively affecting the performance of the display adapter."

Thanks jam and jackbomb. I'll be switching back to XP Professional tonight. It's a bit disheartening that a 2 yr old computer can't even run the latest OS. :(
