Specs: Windows XP
How do I physically remove the hard disk on my E-Machine (PC-EMAT 2885) before it is recycled. I have no confidence in the wipe or shred software.

Do you mean eMachines T2885?

Make sure the power cord is unplugged, remove the side panel from the case, unplug the cables to the HDD, remove the screws that secure the HDD in place, then smash HDD with a large hammer.

Hammer might not do it. HDDs have been known to stop small caliber rounds.

Now if you opened up the HDD and smashed the platters (careful, they're probably glass or ceramic), well now we're talking. Also, it'll give you access to the rare earth magnets, which are some of the strongest you'll find. Put them on your fridge! Then never get them off again.

Any software that offers to "zero fill" the hard drive or similar can be trusted and is not recoverable, oh ye of little faith. Here's what the Intelligence community does......they drill down through the casing and through the platter in several locations, hence making the data worthless. Hammer, drill or Zero Fill.........it even rhymes!
