I am at the finale stages of putting a Dell gx20 motherboard in a generic case. A true challenge.

Board, drives cards and os are in and everything works perfectly.

Before I button it up I need to redo the thermal grease. Board came with heat sink removed.

Considering this is just one heat sink and it is unlikely that I will be using it again I'm considering making it.

A search on the Internet has come up with
a mixture of non grit toothpaste vaseline and diaper rash cream.

Does this mixture sound about right?

Buying a 32oz tube or a ten pack seems insane. All I need is a drop.

I don't know about non grit toothpaste or diaper rash cream but one thing I do know is that at the temperatures that the heat-sink is likely to encounter, Vaseline with melt and become a liquid.

Go out and buy a tube of the right stuff. It has compounds in it that won't melt and are designed for maximum heat conductivity. Its not expensive and it does keep.

Thermal paste is available in small quantities. I have NEVER seen a 32oz. size or 10 pack. Not sure what you are looking at.

Radio Shack sells "heatsink grease" for $3.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...

I've read that diaper rash ointment can be used because the main ingredient is usually zinc oxide...the same stuff used in the Radio Shack brand grease. But if you have to buy something anyway, why not get real heatsink grease rather than a substitute?

Here, I found the article:

Or you might wanna consider using Vegemite...LMAO!

Vaseline seems like an odd ingredient. You want a substance that quickly transfers heat. Vaseline is more like a blanket. I knew someone from way up north who said on the 40 below days they'd smear vaseline on their faces in order to keep warm.

I saw a movie years ago where cons were going to break out of prison in the dead of winter. They covered themselves in axial grease to keep there body heat from escaping.

The vaseline keeps the toothpaste from drying out.

Going to Radio shack tomorrow.....not Costco, Ebay or our local computer repair store.

Local repair shop wanted $15.00 to apply thermal grease on the heat sink. But wait! If I bring the heat sink in there is also a $45.00 bench charge. So just how do I get the grease home??? Do you sell it? Oh no...this is not a do it yourself shop....were professionals.

Ever wanted to reach across the counter and
%&$#!

Cheap Guys said just bring it in... computer and heat sink and they will apply, install no charge. They are 32 miles away though.

Yep keeps the toothpaste from drying out.

Most locally owned computer stores should keep thermal paste in stock for customers to buy. Never heard of a store insisting that they do it for you instead of selling you a tube.

I believe the reach across the counter idea has some merit. ;)
