Subject: Worried about my ram upgradeOS: Win Xp Home Sp2CPU/Ram: P4 1.8ghz/768mb |
Comment: I just upgraded my RAM today from 256mb to 768mb by adding a 512mb stick. The first time I tried to upgrade it was unsuccessful because the store gave me the wrong type for my computer (even though I took in a manual which states the right one). So today they sold me a different one which they said was different to the one I needed, but would still work and is cheaper. My computer has detected it (on the bios start-up screen) and does appear to be faster, but I was just looking for some confirmation. It's supposed to take "184-pinn PC1600/PC2100 compliant 2.5V single or double side 64-bit wide data path DDR SDRAM". The RAM I was sold is DDR 400MHz PC-3200 memory. Is this fine for my computer? Also, the computer has 3 dimm banks, and I thought I would space the 2 sticks out and leave the blank dimm bank in the middle so they weren't too close together for heat purposes, is this also fine? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)It dosent really matter too much. You are running the RAM at lower speeds so it's not like its oging to be overworked, and If your motherboard sees it, it should be fine. Ussualy people put the ram next to eachother and leave the empty slots at the edge, but it dosent matter, if its working you have nothing to worry about. By the way, RAM makes very little heat anyways especialy RAM that isnt being worked hard! You have nothing to worry about.
