My system is a compaq presario 5184 - was working fine, installed a new pci graphics card. System came up with the details on the card, and then the word Compaq but won't start. There are no beeps ): When I try to start from a cd, I get a keyboard error message (holding down the C) I tried starting from a floppy & nothing happens. I took the card out, checked all the connections on the motherboard...to no avail. I was trying to upgrade this card so my son could play his new game for his b-day. Any prayer at all...or is it toast. ):

Go into the Bios and make sure your built in video is disabled.

patty, when your computer starts up that flashes the compaq logo, hit delete and go the advanced section and look for PCI devices, etc... if there is nothing for disableing the onboard video, then visit compaq.com and download a new rompaq (aka bios upgrade).
